The first Gateway City Council / Planning Commission Joint Study Session took place on August 23, 2023. At this meeting, the three-person sitting Council unanimously affirmed that there will be no new road on L Street. The concept of a couplet with K Street and L Street is to be eliminated from the draft Gateway Area Plan.
There is plenty to write about as take-aways from this meeting. Much good was said, and many misconstrued or false notions expressed also. All that will be in a separate article.
The first public speaker was Leslie Quinn. She is a founding member of the beloved local band “Vanishing Pints.” She sang this song:
Sunny day, sweeping the gates away.
On my way to where the streets are safe.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Linear Park?
Walk and ride with all our Arcata pride.
Friendly neighbors there, that’s where we meet.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to L Street.
No dangerous semi-trucks.
And maybe a few small ducks. (Quack)
How much money have we already spent?
Can you tell me, can we really all have affordable rent?
Families come and play.
Here in Linear Park, it will stay that way.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Linear Park.
Don’t want no couplets in the dark.
How to get to Linear Park… How to get to Linear Park….
