Should L Street become a major roadway for the southbound traffic from Alliance to Samoa?
Or should it become a car-free (or almost car-free) Linear Park, as a trail, a bikepath, and a quiet walking space running past the Creamery Building and the arts district — for people to meet, sit, stroll, and have as a refuge within the new Gateway area?
The Transportation Safety Committee has strongly expressed their views about having the L Street corridor as a Linear Park. And many citizens have spoken out in favor of the corridor as a Linear Park as well.

Cities all over California, all over this country, and all over the world are seeing the value — to people — of removing asphalt roadways to create walkable open space. Through the strong efforts of the Rail-to-Trail commitment, coupled with the push from the wonderful people in the Creamery District, we here in Arcata already have the beginnings of what other cities wish they had. Let’s keep it, expand on it, and enjoy it.

PETITION FOR THE L STREET PATHWAY
TO BECOME A PERMANENT LINEAR PARK
We support the existing L Street bicycle-pedestrian pathway be officially designated as a Linear Park, from Alliance Road to Samoa Boulevard, and that this Linear Park be preserved and enhanced as a green space for recreation, play and community.
We also support the spoken recommendation from the Chair of the Arcata Transportation Safety Committee at its August 2, 2022 meeting: “Revise the circulation plan that eliminates L Street as being considered for new streets and car traffic. This area is recommended to become a car-free Linear Park that prioritizes people.”
