Their model is based on training input from the Internet that was there prior to September 2021, so that doesn’t help much with the Gateway Plan. (The plan’s initial draft came out in December, 2021.) Google’s “Bard” AI implementation is more or less up to the minute — in the passage below there is a reference to the Council and Planning Commission joint study session that took place on September 26, just two days ago.

“Bard” supplied three drafts of essays with slightly different information and format. I combined paragraphs from each of them, in a way that a real person can do in a better way (at least at the present time). What you see here was not otherwise edited.

To repeat:  This is here for your enjoyment. It is not a complete description of the Gateway Area Plan. It is not entirely accurate in places.

But for an overall view of the Gateway Plan, it’s actually pretty good.

Could we employ AI to, say, help write our Gateway form-based code? No… not at the current time. Or use it to help with our decision-making process?  Well, there are lots and lots of variables involved. Just evaluating all the many criteria would take more work than would an open discussion among the human beings of Arcata. Let’s leave it to our Planning Commission and City Council to figure things out — with input from the public and other knowledgeable sources too, of course.
