Hi David,
Thank you again for taking members of our office on a walking tour. As real estate agents and
community members, we value Arcata on a personal and economic level. After the tour with
you I have been thinking about these zoning changes a lot.
I see the need for housing Humboldt County, especially in Arcata. In my line of work the type of housing people are most asking for are nicer, single family homes. I have so many clients who are not able to buy just because we can’t find something that is a nice, single family home. These clients are not looking for housing in a 7 story complex. How can we create more single family housing in Arcata? I don’t see the space for it, but it’s a buyer need, and something to consider.
While we are on the topic of 7 stories, I am also concerned about the whole look and feel of
Arcata as a small town. We walked by the Jacoby Store House, we walked by the new
construction going in. Again, I know we need housing, and I did hear you about some design ideas to help some of these building feel less looming, but I guess I’m just not fully convinced this is the look and feel of Arcata. That being said, I like the different zone ideas so it would not all go straight into 7 stories high, there would be variation and it seems like there has been a lot of thought put into this. I’m just worried about the totally different feel of that area fitting in with the rest of Arcata.
My other worry is about how the traffic would get dealt with.
My last concern/input is about getting rid of all light industrial in Arcata. I really appreciate
being able to drop my car off at the mechanic and walking to work. I think having the zoning changed so that businesses like my mechanic and my auto body person would not be in compliance with the zoning is not a great idea. Having my mechanic and auto body people within walking distance to work (or home) is incredibly valuable and a part of why Arcata is special. Do not throw out the baby with the bath water.
Thank you for taking the time to take our office on a walk, and for reading my feedback.
